D.I.Y Ripped Jeans; The Trend

This old but new fashion trend from the 80's (I believe) is just emerging more and more onto the fashion/blogger/shop scene.. put aside your plain blue skinnies - 'they are so last season' (hehe I never usually say that).

I searched high and low for the perfect cut and fit of the ripped jeans trend as I loved the idea of them, with heels they can actually look pretty glamorous! However, ones with big enough rips were too skinny, ones with the perfect cut the rips weren't big enough.. so I decided to make my own and I'm going to show you how I made them! I'm still on the hunt for the perfect pair but I am rather fond with how they turned out!

The jeans I chose to potentially destroy if they didn't go to plan were this straight cut jeans from River Island which I got quite a while ago as emergency type jeans. They fit almost mid waisted, as I have quite big hips I can't really pull off the low-waisted look, it just doesn't look right.

I began by plotting out where I was going to make the cuts, I wanted one on the thigh and one on the knee, I think eventually I'm going to add some more cuts to the other side too but I want to keep it quite tame for now before I end up having no material left, they'll end up looking like Christina Aguilera's 'Dirty' trousers.. haha.

I just simply used some sharp household scissors which were lying around, nothing fancy and these seemed to do the job just right. I made sure I was only cutting the top layer and made the first incision (I am the jeans surgeon of course) and worked out how far across I wanted it, then using some tweezers - I folded the fabric over and began to fray the denim. How much fraying to create is completely up to your own preference, I wanted to start with something simple before I really tear these jeans to shreds.

Looking totally 'sunkissed' in these pictures (haha) I think chuck on some smart looking sandals (mine are from chockersshoes) and a nice top and you're sorted.

I feel like i'm going to eventually add some more fraying to these, especially around the thigh area to add some slight sex appeal there. Otherwise I think this such a brilliant thing to do, as everyone has their own preference to how big they want the rips and the cut of jean.

I'm still on the hunt however, for another pair of these - maybe in a lighter wash. Let me know where to look!

Have a lovely day and let me know if you try out your own D.I.Y ripped jeans!
